Open Data, a multi billion dollar opportunity.
Neelie Kroes, European commissioner
At We Open Data we aim to facilitate this open data opportunity by focusing on helping public/private entities creating a win-win by opening up data in a correct and easy way.
We believe that
in order to facilitate open data, open tools are necessary to create a transparant data ecosystem. We support this open community through SLAs and open source contributions.
In the summer of 2011, The DataTank came to see first digital light. Its first lines were written with a ton of good will and passion and continues to be so. After a couple of days we launched our MVP, and published a dataset of a 10 day festival in Ghent. After 36 hours, 3 festival applications were written on top of our data publishing tool and were available in the official app stores, ready to guide festival attendees through all the events. For us, this was a sign that we were on the right track.
Ever since our first MVP, we've continued to evangelize open data in public entities and with it our set of open tools. The last few years the open data idea has reached a point where it is entirely backed by all levels of the government. This gives us the challenge to provide tools that get the best out of open data in the simplest way possible and provide maximum interaction for civilians, policy makers and application developers. And we're taking that challenge head on.
